Mass
Your weight is one number, but its composition varies entirely by how much muscle it contains. This calculator estimates your skeletal muscle mass in kilograms and its share of your total weight.
Share of your weight:—%
What equation is used?
We use the Lee et al. (2000) equation, an anthropometric formula that estimates skeletal muscle mass from weight, height, age and sex without needing a DEXA or BIA device. The result is a solid approximation for self-tracking; clinically precise measurement requires dedicated equipment.
What does the result mean?
Muscle typically makes up 38–54% of adult men's weight and 28–40% of women's, gradually declining with age (age-related muscle loss is known as sarcopenia). A higher percentage also means a higher basal metabolism, since muscle is the body's most energy-hungry tissue at rest.
How to use this number to improve your life?
If your percentage is low for your age, add resistance training two to three times a week along with adequate protein intake (roughly 1.2–1.6 g per kilogram of body weight) — this is proven to preserve muscle and resist age-related loss. Recalculate every couple of months to track the trend, not daily fluctuation.
